Two brothers had an irresponsible father, one of them decided to pave an alternative path that didn’t align with their status quo while the other brother blamed his father all his life for his failures. The two brothers were lawful victims but one thing they all had willfully was ‘choice’.
The way we think shapes what we get out of life. Our minds play a role in what we believe about ourselves and how we lead our lives. The right mindset is a choice and a key factor for success.
What is a Fixed Mindset?
A fixed mindset believes that intelligence, talent, and other qualities in a person are innate and constant. A person with this mindset is constrained by their beliefs, their beliefs are unchangeable. Most times you hear them say “when you’re not good at something, you’ll never be good at it” or “this is who I am, nothing can ever change”. This mindset can be affiliated with the brother who played the blame game.
What is a Growth Mindset?
A growth mindset believes that intelligence and talent can be honed with actions and efforts over time. A person with this mindset knows that there is no permanent learning curve; they know that they can develop and improve from one certain state to another.
The difference between a growth mindset and a fixed mindset
Intelligence Quotient
A growth mindset sees intelligence as something that can be improved over time while a fixed mindset sees intelligence as something that is static.
Resistance
A growth mindset embraces challenges and obstacles as an opportunity to learn, they see challenges as motivations. A fixed mindset avoids challenges to prevent the likelihood of failure.
Effort
A person with a growth mindset believes that effort and actions can lead to mastery but the one with a fixed mindset believes that the possession of a special ability is enough for success, efforts and practice are not needed.
Failure
A growth mindset accepts and sees failures as temporary setbacks in the achievement of goals while a fixed mindset gives up easily and sees setbacks as permanent failures.
Success
A growth mindset sees other people’s success as a source of inspiration. A fixed mindset sees the success of others as a threat which results in jealousy and comparisons.
Criticism
People with a growth mindset appreciate feedback and constructive criticism; they view them as opportunities to learn and grow while people with a fixed mindset see constructive criticism and feedback as a personal attack
A growth mindset reduces burnout, depression, anxiety, and behavioral problems.
Bonus: people with a fixed mindset focus on the outcome since they consider results as their identity although it is important to applaud excellent outcomes, begin to reward the process and effort exerted as this promotes a growth mindset.
