What is Mindfulness?

 The mind is usually always in motion, thinking, analyzing, and trying to figure things out. The practice of mindfulness helps subject the mind to the present reality.

It gradually conditions the mind to settle into the present moment. When mindfulness is practiced over time, it teaches the mind to be still and fully immersed in the present. It could be during meditation, cooking, cleaning, walking, journaling, and every other day-to-day activity.

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness speaks about the practice of being fully aware of the present moment, not dwelling in the past or wandering into the future.

It is the practice of being "in the now" like taking note of your breath, feeling the sensations of your body, or being in touch with your present activity.

Benefits of mindfulness

According to health and psychology, mindfulness can be beneficial in the following ways;

  • It improves cognitive ability
  • It reduces stress, depression, and anxiety
  • It increases the sense of well-being
  • It slows brain aging
  • It improves the quality of life for those living with chronic conditions

A basic mindfulness technique you can try;

Pay attention

In today's world, everyone is busy, activities are rarely personalized most times they are just for survival or the need to just get it done. Learn to use all your senses at the moment. For example, when preparing or eating a meal, take time to smell it, taste it and enjoy every bit of it.

Live in the Moment
Find pleasure even in the simplest of things.

Self-compassion
Embrace yourself, treat yourself like a good friend.

Breath practice
Focus on your breath, the inhalation, and exhalation. Breathe in and out, and feel the warmth of the exhaled air and the cool of the inhaled air.

Mindfulness is quite broad and there are different ways to practice mindfulness. Do whatever works for you as long as it puts you in control of your mind.

 Long ago, in a faraway land called Sumer near the Persian Gulf, the city was known as the cradle of civilization.  When their businesses began to bloom such that the administration and calculations of trade numbers or purchases could no longer be done by memory, causing a drag in their mode of operations. This disruption motivated a creative Sumerian to create a solution to the problem which brought about the art of writing. Writing was introduced to the system primarily for record-keeping. Although writing started with symbols (pictograph) and inscriptions on local materials such as clay and reeds. Writing evolved into a sophisticated script called the cuneiform which was used to record information about bureaucracy and authority, and other aspects of life. These were mostly written on scrolls.
